1000 WORDS

OPENS THURS., MAY. 31, 2018, 5-8 pm Exhibition runs through July. 27, 2018

This is one exhibit where the artwork doesn’t speak for itself. This exhibition displays the finished artwork in conjunction with recorded storytelling from the artists.

COMMONPLACE

OPENS THURS., FEB. 8, 2017, 5-8 pm Exhibition runs through Mar. 25, 2018

When our everyday routines and experiences are often dismissed as a means to an end; the composition of our life becomes unremarkable. Commonplace presents artwork that explores how the mundane borders on the sublime, and the fine line between ordinary and extraordinary. Viewers can experience and share in the everyday experiences of others through art, and re-enter the commonplace with renewed senses.

“It’s the sides of the mountain which sustain life, not the top.”
– Robert M. Persig

STRUCTURAL DREAMS

OPENS THURS., FEB. 9, 2017, 5–8 pm Exhibition runs through March 16, 2017

Some people like to put a foot in the water before they jump in. Structural Dreams exhibits art that begins with geometry as a framework and then allows creative free-associations to flourish. The viewer is invited to find balance between chaos and control while enjoying the variety of approaches to this eternal theme. For example, an artist may start with a drawn grid on the paper and then allow color choices to be more reactive, creating wonderfully complex compositions.

ENVELOPE

Sept 18 – Nov 14, 2014

Correspondence Art or Mail Art grew out of the Fluxus Movement of the 1950’s and 60’s, challenging ideas about what is and isn’t precious about art, how it’s made and sold and by whom. It continues to grow and expand today out of a grass roots desire for connectivity and accessibility to the arts. For this exhibition, artists from V+V will experiment not only with what, but with whom they correspond, creating new partnerships with sister organizations, each other and the world. The result of these mailed experiments will be on display at our Northside gallery.

SPACE IS THE PLACE

Feb 6 – March 28, 2014

“In 1969 the newspapers published the photograph taken from the spaceship traveling to the moon. This was the first photograph of the entire Earth. The image that man had pursued for centuries was presented for our view; it held within it all previous, incomplete images, all books that had been written, all signs, those that had been deciphered and those that had not. It was not only the image of the entire world, but the only image that contained all other images of the world: graffiti, frescoes, paintings, writings, photographs, books, films. It was at once the representation of the world and all representations of the world.”

— Luigi Ghirri, 1978

Ambiguous, large beyond comprehension and loaded with mysterious beauty, the universe functions as inspiration for Space Is the Place.

BIRD STATE

Apr 25- June 7, 2013

Birds fill the worlds with life, sound, and color. The very word “bird” is life affirming; it’s Old English for nestling, which is a small thing in a snug place. Like us, birds are part of the web of life and help to maintain the balance of nature by eating insects and rodents, pollinating flowers, and spreading seeds across the earth. Birds enter our consicuosness because they are beautiful and strange and strikingly unique. We are inspired to make are about them. In this exhibition, V+V artists will explore the many ways we interact with and are affected by the birds around us. The gallery space will be, in effect, a small microcosm of the world at large, filled with bird life, sound, and color.
